Guided Walk – In search of New Hot Wells
May 15, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm| Free
In search of New Hot Wells – a guided walk led by Paul Wood
New Hot Wells was a short-lived spa, just south of the foot of the Gully. The most famous visitor was John Wesley, who was cured of a ‘greedy consumption’. The spring is unlikely to be visible, because the water emerges into the Avon only 2 m above low water.
The walk will include:
– The oldest path from the Downs to the Avon Gorge that is shown on maps,
made in 1703.
– Industrial archaeology from early C20 exploitation.
– An ancient well, which may survive from the pumphouse of 1730.
Meeting point: Sea Walls, beside Circular Road. Time: 2.00pm
No charge, but please book in advance, by contacting Paul Wood
NB There are very steep slopes and uneven ground on this walk.
